STUDIO EXPERIENCE

Although I've been to several of the Yoga locations listed in the Directory, a goal I have is to visit as many as I can, paying respect to and delighting in the studios that make up our Yogic community here in this area of Washington. Join me, as I pop in for a class or workshop at each and share my journey there.

I have a strong belief that doing things that scare or make you uncomfortable is extremely healthy.

It wasn't my first Hot Yoga (Bikram-esque) experience. In fact, it wasn't my first Hot Yoga experience at this location. Many moons ago I had come to this place when it was Mantra Hot Yoga, and I feared the heat. Typically, getting hot sends me into a quick temper and takes the wind out of my sails faster than a hole in a hot air balloon.

But, having been about 5 years and a change of ownership, I decided it was time to face my fear - AGAIN. I reached out to a friend to join me and before I knew it, we were outside the doors on a Thursday night, full of anticipation.

A desk for reception made the check-in process efficient and we were sure to take advantage of the $20 for 20 Days new client special. We were briefed on what to expect and headed to the locker room, equipped with cubbies for your personal belongings, a bathroom and showers. We tucked our items away and headed to the studio.

Unlike many places where their heated Yoga consists of a couple of space heaters to warm it up bit, this place isn't messing around. This studio is fully insulated, fully heated with added humidity, and features a non-slip floor. It was quiet (there's no talking in the studio space) and dimly lit.

Three things that stand out in my mind about my practice that night.

1) Just let the sweat drip - don't fight it. This reminds me much of Yoga philosophy; not resisting, but simply experiencing.

2) Mirrors can be your friend. As I was instructed to gaze strongly into my own eyes, my determination in the postures was amplified.

3) Tree pose in the dark is a trip! With the use of dimmer switches, a pose I am quite comfortable in became as shaky and new as when I was a beginner. Mind blowing!

The class (which is a shortened version of the 26 Hot 90) was over before I knew it and left me energized and keenly aware. Had I come more prepared, I may have stayed for a shower and was quite tempted to stay for the following Yin class.......maybe next week :)
