YOGA - WEST OF THE NARROWS
STUDIO EXPERIENCES
There's no better way to grow your practice and have fun connecting with your Yogi peers than heading to local classes and events! Join me as I pay respect to and delight in the studios that make up our Yogic community here in this area of Washington, and share the details of my journey there.
It was a last minute decision to head there. A long week, tension that needed release, and daily chores checked off my list set me up for an easy escape from the family at home to take care of myself. A lover of a powerful & active Yoga practice, I have in the last year become a strong believer in what a passive practice has to offer, whether with Restorative Yoga, or in this case, Yin.
I reached out to a friend to join and the cards were in her favor too. We ventured out in the dark to Santosha Yoga PNW in Gig Harbor and arrived with plenty of time to get ourselves situated before class began.
The Hot Vinyasa 60 class had just let out and the room was nice and toasty. We gathered the necessary props; 2 blocks, a strap and a blanket and settled in, an action made easy by the dim, almost dark lighting and quiet atmosphere.
75 minutes of long-held (but not too long) poses strung together seamlessly stretched and challenged my hips, side body, low back, shoulders and legs, beckoning me to surrender further each time. The ambient music mimicked that of the womb, a nurturing and familiar tone and pace. Justin's simple, yet concise instruction offered the poses and their modifications while weaving in knowledge and tidbits of encouragement and honesty.
As I always find in Yoga, time ceased to exist in normal parameters and the class was already at its closing. We lay in our choice of final relaxation pose and soaked in the melodic chant Justin had been bestowed by his teacher. We each left at our own pace, peeling ourselves from the comfort of our mats and the experience we had recieved. That is the nature of Yoga; something you receive rather than grasp for.
Namaste, fellow Yogis.
